Charlotte, NC!

During my Spring break in 2024, I decided to serve with UGA IMPACT concerning education access in Charlotte, NC! I learned so much about education access and the intersectionality between education itself, health, and the politics that are woven into it. Although we were mainly there for service, we did visit the beautiful city of Charlotte, go to the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture, and watched Teach Us All, an incredible documentary about the inequalities that still exist in many schools today!

On Saturday March 2nd, 2024, we served dinner to the women and children who visited the Salvation Army. The shelter is there for the residents of the Charlotte community 24/7 for 365 days year-round!

On Sunday March 3rd, 2024, we did a remote service where we created encouraging and motivational notes, bookmarks, and flashcards that consisted of colors, shapes, math, letters of the alphabet, and sight words for kids of the Charlotte community!

On Monday, March 4th, 2024, we volunteered at Promising pages, a place where donated books come in and we clean them up to make sure they’re at their prime! The director had said an amazing quote regarding the books saying that although the books have been outgrown, “they still have a lot of life left” for other kids. Some of us also painted bookshelves where we got to keep some super cute aprons!

On Tuesday, March 5th, 2024, we worked at Hope Haven, a residential facility that houses residents from six months to two years after they have finished a detox program. The facility teaches residents to live substance free while also expanding on the skills they already know (No pictures for the privacy of the residents)! Later that day we went to volunteer at Classroom Central, a wonderful building that offers free school supplies for teachers to browse through.

On Wednesday, March 6th, 2024, we went back to Hope Haven to finish some volunteer work, then visited UNC Charlotte’s campus. We worked at the Jamil Niner Student Food Pantry on campus that provides free food, hygiene, and other items to students and administration!

Dahlonega, GA!

During my Fall break in 2024, I decided to once again serve with UGA IMPACT! This time around we went to Dahlonega, GA. Although a shorter trip, we volunteered with Community Helping Place. This organization’s mission is to serve and transform the lives of Lumpkin County residents and they have done so for 35 years. CHP offers three different services – the Anne Green free clinic along with emergency transportation, the thrift store, and the food pantry. The profits from the thrift store helps fund all the other services! We helped move, sort, and organize lots of items for the organization!
